Is Modern Methods Of Construction (MMC) A Viable Sustainable Construction Option? (2018)

Modern Methods Of Construction Dissertation – Global warming and climate change, a term referred to as The Greenhouse Effect, has led to various Government strategies in a bid to try and control and mitigate these effects. The construction industry is a major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions, which has led to a call for a more sustainable approach from the construction industry. Seeking to address this, the industry has responded by establishing Sustainability Performance Indicators (SPI’s), alongside third party bodies such as British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).

This has led to adoption of past construction processes known as Pre-fabrication, and Off-Site Manufacturing (OSM), using new construction materials through advances in technology. This has been defined as Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), with the goal of delivering a more sustainable construction method. This Dissertation will evaluate if MMC is delivering a more sustainable construction process as defined by government strategy and third party bodies, and the three sustainability pillars of Environmental, Economic, and Social considerations.

A Literature Review was undertaken to establish government strategies and industry benchmarks, and SPI’s, with current industry usage, driver and barriers identified in the use of MMC. This data was compared with data gathered from questionnaires from industry professionals from various backgrounds to evaluate their experience with implementing MMC. The study uncovered that MMC can deliver improved sustainable benefits, over more traditional construction methods, but problems with project delivery, and product quality can erode these claims. If the move to sustainable construction is to be realized, issues surrounding these finding need to be addressed to promote the uptake of this construction process.
