An Assessment of Project Quality Management within the Chinese Construction Industry (2013)

Project Quality Management in China Dissertation – As a significant part of project management system, quality management plays a very important part in improving the project delivering efficiency and final results, especially for the construction industry, which is well known for its poor performance and inaccuracy. Due to the historical background, project quality management varied from western practices with its unique characters.

After reviewing the literature related to China’s quality management, it was found that little research has been conducted in the area of China’s quality management. In order to bridge the gap and provide readers with a better understanding of China’s approach to project quality management and the current conditions of product quality and investigate the current pitfalls and obstacles existing in both internal and external context, the objective of this paper is to explore the current quality management status within the China’s construction industry.

The research was conducted through both secondary and primary research. The latter one comprised of both interviews and questionnaire survey. Through investigation, the current project quality management practice was examined and barriers to implementation of quality management in construction industry were identified with the rank of importance. Moreover, the main causes of these obstacles were also analysed. In the end, the main conclusions were summarized with further recommendations for the industry practitioners. After reviewing the literature related to China’s quality management, it has become very clear that little research has been conducted in the area of China’s quality management internationally.

Therefore, it is very difficult for people outside China to obtain relevant information on China’s quality management issues. In order to bridge the gap and provide readers with a better understanding of China’s approach to project quality management and the current conditions of product quality and investigate the current pitfalls and obstacles existing in both internal and external context, the objective of this paper is to explore the current quality management status within the China’s construction industry, including the evaluation of general application status, the investigation of relevant knowledge of construction practitioners, the analysis of the main methods and techniques applied into quality management process and also the main characters and drawbacks of the current quality management process of construction enterprises.

Then based on the investigation results and relevant analysis, eventually the suggestions and recommendations for improvement project quality management system and process for construction companies will be proposed.
