Impact of Recession on Consumer Buying Dissertation – This dissertation explores the effect recession has had on students buying smart phones in the city of London. This is important given the rapid rise in sales of smart phones across the world, however the purchase of other new products has been affected and customers have reduced their consumption. Peer pressure and desire to be seen as modern seem to control the desire of students in London to own smartphones.

The author explores various facets of this phenomenon to determine the effect recession has had on this particular group of students. Primary and secondary data and in addition own observations has been presented in pursuit of exploring this unique phenomenon. The aim of this research is to understand the result of the economic crisis of 2007/2008 on the trend of consumption of smart phones. The main aim of this research is to determine the effect of recession on the consumer buying behaviours of students on smart phones in London. The consumer buying behaviours are influenced by certain factors.

These factors cannot be ignored since they contribute to the buying power of the consumers whether there is an economic crisis or not. The recent changes in the consumer buying behaviour due to recession has either affected the business in a positive or negative way especially in the buying of smart phones (Ofcom, 2011). In this research, the age group that is being targeted is students. The consumer buying power of students is highly influenced by certain factors. These factors will also be discussed. The objectives of this study is to;

  • To determine whether the recent recession has had any impact on the rate at which phones are consumed by students
  • To confirm whether the rates and occurrences in the consumption of goods in London and United Kingdom represent the rate of consumption of smart phones.
