An Investigation into International Human Resource Performance Management – Case Studies into Coca Cola and Dow Chemical (2013)

International Human Resource Management is an area which has existed for some time now, however the impact of the current economic climate on the progress of international operations of companies and corporations are yet to be measured. This dissertation will look in to the importance of the welfare of the employee, their concerns, which will set the tone for the quantitative element of this research. The two corporations which will be analysed are both renowned and reputable international corporations;

  • Coca Cola which is a carbonated soft drink produced by the Coca Cola Company (an international corporation) which as a result of marketing tactics in the twentieth century led to its dominance in the soft drink industry
  • Dow Chemical in terms of revenue is the worlds largest chemical manufacturer, manufacturing plastics, chemicals, and agricultural products

This dissertation will seek to determine how the current economic climate has had an impact on International Human Resource Management and to what extent employees hold value to operations of their respective companies abroad. Coca Cola and Dow Chemical are huge corporations that have a vested interest in promoting their businesses abroad. This means extending their operations to the various locations across the globe to ring true to the meaning of becoming a real global corporation. Inevitably, operation centres would need to be set up in various locations to ensure capacity, growth, reliability and efficiency.

With this in mind, there also needs to be a vested interest in Human Resource, ultimately protecting and developing the interests of such global corporations. Being global, presents inherent problems such as language barriers, cultural differences, political elements (which are particularly relevant at the moment) and other such issues. It is amidst such difference where the Voice of the employee is recognised as being an important factor which otherwise may not have come to the fore.

Employee Voice is often a term associated with Employee involvement and is a concept which has been growing in importance over the past few decades, primarily driven by the growing body of HRM theory, improving levels of employee education and the advancement of technology.
